Water Softner Sizing

Water Softner Sizing

Postby dml000 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 4:44 pm

I am trying to size a softner!

Raw water test
HARDNESS 8 GPG
IRON 7-8 PPM
MANGANESE 0
PH 6.8

6 PEOPLE
INFOR FOR CALC. WELL PUMP RATE... A LITTLE OVER 3.5 GALLONS... AND THE PUMP RUN DOWN 35 SECONDS. (GOULDS 1HP EXTERNAL JET PUMP)

My pressure tank says that it is a 5.4 drawdown @ 40/60 which I am running at.
Should'nt the amount collected before the pump turns on be similar to the drawdown gallons?

To learn all about sizing visit the sizing page on my web site.

Yes you should be getting more water out of the pressure tank, check the air pressure in it with no water in it, to be 1-2 psi less than the 40 psi with no water in the tank.

Here is what I came up with Gary, could you see if I am right? (Nice talking with you the other night)

Hardness 8
Iron 8
SFR 11 gal

6 people x 60gal = 360 gal x 16 gpg = 5760 gpd x 8 days = 46080

2.5 cu ft of resin @ 6lb per ft for 50,000 grains of capacity

I wll get the sst 60 resin and turbulator dist. tube like you suggested with the Fleck 2510.

Does this sound right? When I plugged the numbers on the Cubic Foot and Capacity Calculator page it suggested 115,200 Total Grains of Capacity.

Any site that you can recommend to purchase the softener?

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave.

Yes a 2.5 cuft gets you a constant SFR of 18 gpm and 50K @ 6lbs/cuft (15 lbs per regeneration) for a salt efficiency of 3333 grains/lb.

Sorry I don't know where to tell you to buy it, all the internet dealers' web sites I know of do not get into telling you how to program the cycle positions very well if at all. That's why Clack shut down internet sales of their valves. And using the factory defaults is inefficient for water use efficiency.

The 2510 is a good valve but remember, you can not replace the seals and spacers without the special Fleck 2510 tools.

Your compensated hardness is incorrect. Each ppm of iron is the equivilent of 4 (or 5) grains of hardness. Thus your compensated hardness is 40 (or 48). That is why the calculator was suggesting a much higher capacity.

That is true... he should have read the instructions a bit more carefully.

OK.....so what do you think about this unit?

http://www.ohiopurewaterco.com/shop/cus ... 81&page=1#

It would have been nice to go through you Gary and have it customized!

It is not easy finding everything you need as far as the turbulator, sst 60 resin and correct SFR!

The one on the link doesn't come with the turbulator, so I will have to order and install. (is that a 1.05 riser tube?)

Is the CanPro MediaGuard Cartridge System worth getting?

Thanks

Call or email the company and ask if they will provide a turbulator. Most likely they will. Avoid the MediaGuard.
